๐Ÿ›’ Where to Buy

โš ๏ธ Golden Rule of Retro Handhelds: Throw away the cheap MicroSD card that comes in the box โ€” it will fail. And never use a high-wattage PD “Fast Charger” on these devices; it can damage the battery. Use a standard 5V/1.5A brick.

Device Overview: PowKiddy RK2023

The PowKiddy RK2023 is Powkiddy’s horizontal take on the Rockchip RK3566 formula that Anbernic’s RG353 line made familiar across 2022 and 2023. It pairs a 3.5-inch 4:3 screen with dual analog sticks and a full set of shoulder buttons, and it launched around $80 as a cheaper, chunkier alternative to the metal-bodied competition. This is a Linux emulation box, not a general-purpose computer, and its ambitions stop at the point where 3D-heavy sixth-generation games begin. Judge it as a workhorse for the 8- to 32-bit era and it holds up; expect a pocket console and you will be disappointed.

Emulation performance, generation by generation

The RK3566 is a quad-core ARM Cortex-A55 clocked around 1.8GHz with a Mali-G52 GPU and, on this unit, 1GB of LPDDR4. That is a modest, power-efficient chip, and it defines exactly what the RK2023 does well. Everything from the 8- and 16-bit era runs without drama: NES, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy through GBA, PC Engine and Neo Geo are all full speed in RetroArch. PlayStation 1 through PCSX-ReARMed or DuckStation is rock solid. Nintendo 64 is where you start managing expectations. Mupen64Plus handles Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time well, but demanding titles such as Perfect Dark or Conker’s Bad Fur Day stutter and need per-game tweaking. PSP through PPSSPP is playable across a large library at native or slightly downscaled resolution, though heavier 3D games like God of War want frameskip. Dreamcast on Flycast runs a good chunk of the catalog at full speed. Nintendo DS via DraStic is comfortable once you settle on a screen layout. What it cannot do is just as important: Saturn emulation is unreliable, and GameCube, Wii, PS2 and 3DS are off the table entirely. Anyone shopping for those needs a Snapdragon-class Android handheld, not this. The 640×480 panel also caps how far you can upscale, so unlike a PC you are not chasing 4K internal resolutions here; the win is clean, sharp integer scaling on lower-res systems rather than brute-force enhancement.

Screen, build and controls

The 3.5-inch IPS panel runs 640×480, laminated to the glass, and it is genuinely bright; reviewers report it reaches comfortable indoor levels at roughly half its brightness slider. The 4:3 shape is the correct call for retro content and wastes no pixels stretching 320×240-era games. The body is plastic and looks a little cheap next to Anbernic’s aluminium shells, but it is solidly assembled with comfortable curved grips. Controls are the compromise zone. The D-pad and face buttons are rubber-membrane rather than clicky microswitches, and the dual analog sticks are conventional potentiometer units, not Hall-effect, so expect some drift down the line. You do get four shoulder buttons, L1/L2 and R1/R2, which matters for mapping PSP and PS1 titles. Round the back and edges there is a 3.5mm headphone jack, dual stereo speakers, a USB-C port, HDMI-out for TV play, and OTG support. The 3500mAh battery is quoted at eight hours by Powkiddy, but independent reviewers land closer to six hours of mixed use, which is respectable for the size and charges over USB-C. The original model ships without WiFi; a later V2 revision added it, so confirm which one you are buying if RetroAchievements or box-art scraping matters to you.

Software and setup

Out of the box it runs Powkiddy’s own single-boot Linux front end, which is functional but plain and rarely updated. The real reason to buy an RK3566 device in 2026 is custom firmware, and this chip is well served. ArkOS is the long-standing community favorite here for a clean, responsive EmulationStation experience. ROCKNIX, the successor to JELOS, and Batocera both support the RK3566 and hand you a more polished, regularly updated OS with per-core settings and network features on the WiFi models. Note that muOS and Knulli target Allwinner hardware, so they are not the right fit for this device and you should not go hunting for them. Setup follows the usual routine: image the firmware to a microSD card with a tool like Rufus or balenaEtcher, boot it from the second card slot, and load ROMs you legally own. Documentation for RK3566 handhelds is mature at this point, so first-time setup is a well-trodden path rather than an experiment.

Price, value and who it is for

At its roughly $79.99 launch price, with some retailers listing it nearer $89.99, the RK2023 was one of the cheaper routes into dual-stick, PSP-capable emulation, undercutting Anbernic’s comparable RG353V and RG353M. By 2026 the RK3566 is showing its age, and newer silicon has pushed the ceiling higher, so the honest pitch is value rather than raw power. Buy it if you mostly live in the up-to-PS1 range, occasionally reach into N64, PSP and Dreamcast, want real physical dual sticks, and would rather spend the saved money on a microSD stuffed with games. Skip it if Saturn, GameCube or PS2 are on your wishlist, if membrane buttons and eventual stick drift are dealbreakers for you, or if you need WiFi and risk grabbing the wrong revision. Within those limits it is an easy, low-cost recommendation.

โš–๏ธ Verdict

โœ… The Good

  • Dual analog sticks plus four shoulder buttons make PS1, N64 and PSP mapping practical, unusual at this sub-$90 price
  • Bright, laminated 640×480 4:3 IPS panel that suits retro content and stays readable at half brightness
  • Strong custom-firmware support for the RK3566: ArkOS, ROCKNIX and Batocera are all mature options
  • Good value with USB-C charging, HDMI-out, OTG and a 3500mAh battery good for roughly six hours

โŒ The Bad

  • Rubber-membrane D-pad and face buttons plus non-Hall-effect sticks that will eventually drift
  • RK3566 is aging: Saturn is unreliable and GameCube, PS2 and 3DS are out of reach entirely
  • Original model has no WiFi (only the later V2 adds it), and the plastic shell looks cheap
