๐Ÿ›’ Where to Buy

โš ๏ธ Golden Rule of Retro Handhelds: Throw away the cheap MicroSD card that comes in the box โ€” it will fail. And never use a high-wattage PD “Fast Charger” on these devices; it can damage the battery. Use a standard 5V/1.5A brick.

Device Overview: Nintendo Switch 2

The Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025 at $449.99 for the console alone, or $499.99 bundled with Mario Kart World in the United States. It is not a reinvention so much as the machine the original Switch always wanted to be: the same hybrid idea โ€” handheld, tabletop, docked to a TV โ€” rebuilt on silicon that is roughly a full console generation newer. Where the 2017 Switch shipped on an aging Nvidia Tegra X1 and 4GB of RAM, the sequel runs a custom Nvidia Tegra T239 and 12GB of LPDDR5X, and it inherits eight years of Nintendo’s catalog through backward compatibility. If you already own a Switch, this is the upgrade. If you skipped the first one, it is the most obvious entry point Nintendo has offered in years.

The hardware and its library

The heart of the system is the Tegra T239, codenamed “Drake,” an Nvidia SoC pairing an eight-core ARM Cortex-A78C CPU with a 1,536-core Ampere GPU. That architecture matters because it brings two things the old Tegra X1 could not: DLSS upscaling and hardware ray tracing. In practice, DLSS is how first-party games reach 4K/60 on a TV, or a clean 1080p in the hands, without brute-forcing every pixel. The 12GB of LPDDR5X โ€” around 9GB usable after the 3GB system reservation โ€” finally gives developers headroom for larger worlds and faster streaming. Internal storage is 256GB of UFS 3.1, eight times the original’s 32GB, though expansion demands the newer, pricier microSD Express cards; ordinary microSD cards will not run games. The launch push leaned on Mario Kart World, a launch-window exclusive built around a connected open map, followed quickly by Donkey Kong Bananza in July 2025 and a run of “Switch 2 Edition” upgrades for existing hits like Tears of the Kingdom. The deeper library, though, is the whole Switch back catalog, which most owners carry over intact.

Homebrew, custom firmware and emulation

Here the story diverges sharply from the first Switch, and anyone hunting for a hackable emulation box should read closely. The original Switch became a homebrew darling because of the unpatchable Tegra X1 bootrom exploit, which led to Atmosphรจre custom firmware and the ability to run RetroArch and standalone emulators up through GameCube and Wii. The Switch 2 has, as of mid-2026, no comparable public entry point. It is locked down, and Nintendo has been unusually aggressive about enforcement โ€” consoles caught using flashcarts such as MIG-style devices, sideloaded content, or piracy have been remotely banned from online services within days. There is no Atmosphรจre equivalent, no CFW-driven RetroArch install, and no on-device emulation scene to speak of. The irony is that the T239 would be a monster emulator if it were ever opened up; the silicon could plausibly chew through GameCube, Wii, and PS2 workloads. For now, treat the Switch 2 as a closed appliance for Nintendo’s own software, not a retro platform. The one sanctioned taste of the past is Nintendo Switch Online, which added a GameCube library โ€” F-Zero GX, Soulcalibur II, Chibi-Robo โ€” exclusive to the Switch 2, alongside the existing NES-through-N64 apps.

Screen, build and revisions

The panel is a 7.9-inch LCD at 1080p with HDR10 and a variable refresh rate up to 120Hz โ€” much larger and sharper than the launch Switch’s 6.2-inch 720p screen, though Nintendo chose LCD over OLED this round, so black levels do not match the Switch OLED model many people had upgraded to. Docked, the system outputs up to 4K at 60Hz or 1440p at 120Hz with HDR. The redesigned Joy-Con 2 attach magnetically rather than sliding on rails, add a mouse mode that lets you glide a controller across a desk as a pointer, and introduce a dedicated “C” button for the new GameChat voice-and-video feature. One honest caveat: Nintendo confirmed the Joy-Con 2 sticks are not Hall effect โ€” the magnetic mounts would interfere with the sensors โ€” so the drift risk that haunted the first generation has not been engineered out. The whole unit weighs 534g with Joy-Con 2 attached, measures 272 x 116 x 13.9mm, carries two USB-C ports (top and bottom), Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth, and a 5,220mAh battery rated for a wide 2-to-6.5-hour window depending on the game. Only the single hardware revision exists so far.

Collecting, price and who it is for

At $449.99 โ€” or $499.99 with Mario Kart World โ€” the Switch 2 sits well above the original’s $299 launch, and software has crept up too, with Mario Kart World priced at $79.99. Because the machine is barely a year old, there is essentially no used-market discount yet; supply has been the story, not deals. Buy it if you want current first-party Nintendo games at their best, or if you are still on a launch Switch and feel the age in every load screen. Hold off, for now, if your sole interest is emulation or homebrew โ€” the locked-down Switch 2 is the wrong tool, and a hacked older Switch or a dedicated Linux handheld serves that far better. This is a console built for playing Nintendo’s library, not for bending it to your own.

โš–๏ธ Verdict

โœ… The Good

  • Genuine generational jump in power: custom Nvidia Tegra T239 with DLSS and ray tracing, 12GB LPDDR5X, and 256GB of fast UFS 3.1 storage
  • Backward compatible with most Switch 1 games, so an eight-year library and your existing collection carry straight over
  • Large 7.9-inch 1080p LCD with HDR10 and up to 120Hz VRR handheld, plus docked output to 4K/60 or 1440p/120
  • Joy-Con 2 add real functional tricks: magnetic attachment, a table-top mouse mode, and a dedicated GameChat button

โŒ The Bad

  • Locked down with no custom firmware or homebrew as of mid-2026, and Nintendo remotely bans flashcart, sideload, and piracy users within days, so it is not an emulation machine
  • Joy-Con 2 sticks are not Hall effect, so the original's stick-drift risk has not been engineered out
  • Expensive to live with: $449.99 console (or $499.99 bundle), $79.99 first-party games, pricey microSD Express-only expansion, and an LCD rather than OLED panel
