๐Ÿ›’ Where to Buy

โš ๏ธ Golden Rule of Retro Handhelds: Throw away the cheap MicroSD card that comes in the box โ€” it will fail. And never use a high-wattage PD “Fast Charger” on these devices; it can damage the battery. Use a standard 5V/1.5A brick.

Device Overview: Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch is the console that made “hybrid” a real product category rather than a marketing slide. It launched on 3 March 2017 at $299.99, and its trick has never needed explaining twice: slide it into the dock and it feeds your TV at up to 1080p, lift it out and it becomes a 6.2-inch tablet with a controller clipped to each side. That single idea sold north of 150 million units and kept a mid-2010s mobile chip commercially alive until the Switch 2 arrived in June 2025. Judge it as a games machine, not a spec sheet, and it is one of the most important consoles ever made. Judge it as hardware in 2026 and it is visibly, deliberately old.

The hardware and its library

Inside is an Nvidia Tegra X1, a 2015-era SoC pairing four ARM Cortex-A57 cores (games get that cluster; the four A53 cores are effectively unused) with a 256-core Maxwell GPU. The GPU runs at 768 MHz docked and throttles to roughly 307-460 MHz in handheld mode, which is exactly why docked games look sharper. There is 4 GB of LPDDR4 and only 32 GB of eMMC storage, so a microSD card (up to 2 TB) is not optional, it is step two of setup. None of that is fast by modern standards, and it never was; the Switch competes on software, not silicon. The native library is the argument: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, Super Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Metroid Dread, Splatoon and the mainline Pokemon titles. These are first-party games you cannot legally play anywhere else, and most of them run better here than any emulator will manage for years.

Homebrew, custom firmware and emulation

The Switch has one of the most developed hacking scenes of any modern console, but everything hinges on which unit you own. The original 2017 “Erista” boards contain the Fusee Gelee bug, a bootROM flaw in the Tegra X1 that Nvidia and Nintendo cannot patch in software. On those consoles you enter RCM with a jig, inject the Hekate bootloader over USB, and boot Atmosphere, the leading custom firmware. Atmosphere gives you an emuNAND (a sandboxed copy of the system so your clean install stays untouched), homebrew, and Tesla overlays. Nintendo closed the door around mid-2018: “patched” Erista units and every Mariko-based console (the 2019 revised model, the Lite and the OLED) cannot use RCM and require a hardware modchip such as PicoFly or HWFLY, RP2040-based chips that must be soldered in. That is real risk on a console you may want to keep. Once modded, native emulation is genuinely good for older systems: RetroArch runs NES, SNES, Genesis, GBA, PS1, N64 and PSP well, Dreamcast and Saturn are mostly playable, GameCube and Wii through Dolphin are possible but inconsistent, and PS2 is largely out of reach. Many people skip all of that and install Android via Switchroot for a broader emulation front-end. Note that any online connection while running CFW invites a Nintendo ban, so serious modders keep a hacked console permanently offline.

Screen, build and revisions

The base panel is a 6.2-inch 720p LCD at 60 Hz with capacitive multi-touch, and it is fine rather than good; the OLED revision’s 7-inch screen is a night-and-day upgrade in contrast and black levels while running the same 720p and the same Tegra chip. The console alone weighs about 297 g, roughly 398 g with the Joy-Con attached, and it feels like a plastic tablet because it is one. The Joy-Con are the weak point: the analog sticks are potentiometer-based and drift with wear (Nintendo settled lawsuits over this), the ZL/ZR “triggers” are digital clicks with no analog travel, and the left Joy-Con has four separate face buttons instead of a proper d-pad. Revisions matter when buying. The launch HAC-001 (2017) managed a poor 2.5-6.5 hours; the mid-2019 refresh, HAC-001(-01), swapped in the more efficient Mariko SoC and pushed that to 4.5-9 hours on the same 4310 mAh cell. The Switch Lite (2019, $199) is handheld-only with fixed controls but a real d-pad, and the OLED (2021, $349) added the better screen, a sturdy wide kickstand, 64 GB of storage and a wired-LAN dock. Connectivity across the family is Wi-Fi 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.1.

Collecting, price and who it is for

The original Switch family is being wound down: Nintendo raised its prices in 2026 even after the successor shipped, and plans to stop supplying European retailers in early 2027, which is unusual enough to affect long-term availability. On the used market a base HAC-001 typically runs $120-200 depending on battery health and accessories, while a used OLED sits around $230-290 and is the model worth stretching for. If you want the biggest library of great exclusives for the least money, buy any working Switch, ideally the 2019 red-box revision or an OLED for battery and screen. If your goal is hacking and emulation, deliberately hunt an unpatched 2017 Erista unit (serial numbers can be checked against known-vulnerable ranges) so you can avoid soldering a modchip. What it is not, in 2026, is a performance handheld; buy it for Nintendo’s games and its portability, not its horsepower.

โš–๏ธ Verdict

โœ… The Good

  • Enormous library of first-party exclusives (Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Splatoon) you cannot legally get elsewhere
  • Genuine dock-to-TV hybrid at up to 1080p that still works exactly as advertised
  • Deep, well-documented hacking scene: unpatched 2017 units run Atmosphere CFW with no soldering
  • Cheap on the used market now that the Switch 2 has taken over, especially the base HAC-001

โŒ The Bad

  • Joy-Con analog sticks are potentiometer-based and notorious for drift, and the triggers are digital-only
  • 2015-era Tegra X1 with a 720p screen is slow and low-res by 2026 standards, with just 32 GB of storage
  • CFW on newer "Mariko" units (Lite, OLED, 2019 revision) needs a soldered modchip and risks an online ban
