Device Overview: AYANEO Air

The AYANEO Air arrived in mid-2022 as the answer to a specific complaint: the Steam Deck and its clones were bricks. Where the Deck weighs 669g, the Air comes in at 398g and roughly the footprint of a Switch Lite, and it does that while running full Windows 11 on an x86 AMD APU. This is not an ARM emulation box dressed up as a PC; it is a genuine pocket computer built for games. The headline feature is the display — a 5.5-inch 1080p AMOLED, the first OLED panel to ship in a handheld PC — and the price of all that thinness is a battery that will test your patience. The base Air launched around $549 via Indiegogo, with an entry-level Air Lite (Ryzen 3 5300U) beneath it and an Air Pro on the eight-core Ryzen 7 5825U and a larger 38Wh battery climbing well past that.

Emulation performance, generation by generation

The base Air runs an AMD Ryzen 5 5560U: six Zen 3 cores paired with a Radeon Vega 7 iGPU, a mobile chip tuned for efficiency rather than muscle. In practice, everything up to and including the sixth console generation is effectively solved. NES, SNES, Genesis and GBA run at full speed in RetroArch without a second thought. PlayStation 1 (DuckStation), N64, Dreamcast and PSP (PPSSPP) all hold full speed with resolution bumps to spare. GameCube and Wii in Dolphin are where it gets interesting: the large majority of that library runs at full speed at 2x internal resolution, with only the heaviest titles asking you to drop settings. PlayStation 2 in PCSX2 is similarly strong — most of the catalogue is playable, though a handful of demanding games need per-title tweaking.

Above that line, honesty is required. Wii U via Cemu is playable for a good chunk of the library, but the Vega 7 becomes the bottleneck on the demanding games. Nintendo Switch emulation is the ceiling this chip cannot comfortably clear: contemporary reviews measured roughly 20-23fps in Ryujinx on heavier titles, the difference between a tech demo and a game you actually finish. PlayStation 3 in RPCS3 is CPU-bound and, on six mobile cores, only the lighter titles reach playable framerates. If your dream is portable Breath of the Wild at a locked 30, this is not the chip for it — that job belongs to the later AYANEO Air 1S and its Ryzen 7 7840U.

Screen, build and controls

The AMOLED panel is the reason to buy this thing. At 5.5 inches and 1920×1080 it is sharp to the point of overkill for retro content, but the contrast and colour are genuinely striking, and OLED black levels flatter emulated 2D and Dreamcast-era 3D alike. The chassis is light and well-built, with Hall effect analogue sticks and Hall effect triggers — meaning no stick drift and real analogue trigger travel, an advantage over cheaper rivals. RGB rings circle the sticks, a fingerprint reader sits in the power button, and connectivity covers Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, a USB-C port with DisplayPort 1.4 for 4K60 output, and a microSD slot. The cost of the slim body is thermals: pushed hard, the Air runs warm and its small fan is audible.

Software and setup

Out of the box this is Windows 11, with all the freedom and friction that implies. You get Steam, Game Pass, GOG, Epic and every PC launcher, but you also inherit a desktop OS on a 5.5-inch touchscreen, which is fiddly until you configure it. AYANEO’s own AYASpace utility handles TDP, fan curves and button mapping; many owners prefer the community Handheld Companion for the same jobs. For emulation, EmuDeck’s Windows installer or a frontend like LaunchBox or Retrobat collapses the mess of separate emulators into one couch-friendly interface. Because the Air is x86, the ARM-handheld custom firmwares — muOS, Knulli, ArkOS, ROCKNIX, OnionOS — simply do not apply here; the equivalent move is wiping Windows for a gaming Linux image such as Bazzite, ChimeraOS or Batocera if you want a console-style boot straight into your library.

Price, value and who it is for

The Air was never the value pick. At its $549-and-up launch pricing it cost more than a more powerful Steam Deck, and you paid that premium squarely for size and for the OLED screen. That calculus still holds on the used market, where it trades as a niche, collector-ish item rather than a bargain. Buy the AYANEO Air if you specifically want the smallest, lightest Windows handheld with a gorgeous OLED for PS2-and-below emulation and lighter PC games, and you are willing to babysit the battery and tolerate fan noise to get it. If you want raw performance per dollar, or Switch and PS3 emulation that actually holds up, the Steam Deck OLED or a newer Ryzen 7000-series handheld is the smarter buy.
