Welcome back to Pocketgaming.org! If you’ve been following the incredible developments in the retro handheld scene, you know that native recompilations are currently changing the way we play classic titles. Following the massive success of the Gen 1 recompilation projects, developers are already pushing the boundaries into Johto.

A project known as Gen2Recomped by UNDERdecodedHD has officially surfaced on GitHub, bringing the beloved second-generation Pokémon games into the modern era. Forked directly from the original Gen1Recomp engine, this release is a native LÖVE2D recreation of Pokémon Gold and Silver, with recent updates even bringing support for Pokémon Crystal.

What Makes Gen2Recomped Special?

This isn’t standard emulation. The game’s engine, script virtual machine, and map behaviors have all been hand-written in Lua. The game relies on a legally obtained ROM supplied by the player strictly to decode the original game data and graphics.

Gen2Recomped retains all the robust features established by the upstream Gen 1 project and successfully implements the necessary mechanics for Generation II. This means you get full access to:

  • The complete Johto and Kanto world maps.
  • The real-time day/night cycle.
  • Pokémon breeding and the Day-Care center.
  • The Pokegear, shiny Pokémon, and held items.
  • The iconic Gold and Silver title sequences.

Additionally, the port includes built-in performance scaling under the Options menu to accommodate low-end hardware. Whether you are playing on a high-end PC, a smartphone, or an ARM-based retro handheld, the game logic remains identical while visual presentation scales to match your device.

A Quick Security Note

The developers have issued a strict warning: this official GitHub repository is the only trustworthy source for Gen2Recomped. They are not affiliated with the website gen1recomp.com, and strongly advise against downloading anything from unauthorized third-party sites.

Furthermore, Windows users might experience a false positive warning (like Trojan:Win32/Wacatac!ml) from Windows Defender. This happens because the executable is the official LÖVE runtime with the game archive appended to it, which Defender’s heuristics often flag since it is an unsigned executable.

How to Install and Play

Getting your journey through Johto started is a streamlined process. The application requires a canonical US ROM of either Pokémon Gold, Silver, Red, Blue, or Yellow. The importer will verify the ROM’s SHA-1 hash to ensure it is the correct version.

Installation Steps:

  1. Download the desktop app release for your platform directly from the Gen2Recomped GitHub repository.
  2. Open the application. On your very first boot, the app will prompt you for your game file.
  3. Select your legally obtained .gb or .gbc ROM file, or simply drag and drop it onto the application window.
  4. Wait for the import process to complete. While Gen 1 games take just a few seconds, generating the Gen 2 cache will take a couple of minutes.
  5. Once the import is finished, the game data is saved into a private cache, and the game will start automatically. You will not need to provide the ROM again on future launches.

Music, sound effects, and classic Pokémon cries are all synthesized natively while the game runs, pulling from the audio programs copied out of your verified ROM during the import.

Stay tuned to Pocketgaming for more updates as this recompilation project continues to evolve!
