From Redump to Results: How to Convert ISO to XISO for Xemu

X1 Box

So, you’ve finally set up xemu (the go-to emulator for the “X1 Box,” or the original Xbox), but you’ve hit a wall: your game files won’t load. If you’re looking at a massive 7GB .iso file and getting nothing but a black screen, you’ve likely stumbled upon the “Redump” problem.

Original Xbox discs are dual-layered and contain a lot of “padding” that the emulator doesn’t need. To get them running, you need to convert that standard ISO into an XISO—a “trimmed” version that uses the Xbox DVD File System (XDVDFS).

Here is the quickest way to bridge that gap and get gaming.

The All-in-One Solution: extract-xiso

The gold standard for this process is a tiny, open-source utility called extract-xiso. It’s lightweight, cross-platform, and—best of all—can handle the conversion in seconds.

Method 1: The “Lazy” Drag-and-Drop (Windows)

If you aren’t a fan of typing commands, this is the way to go.

  1. Download the latest extract-xiso.exe (usually found on GitHub or SourceForge).
  2. Locate your game ISO (e.g., Halo.iso).
  3. Drag and drop your ISO file directly onto the extract-xiso.exe icon.
  4. Wait: A folder will appear containing the extracted game files.
  5. Rebuild: Now, you need to turn that folder back into a compatible XISO. The easiest way to do this is via a GUI tool like Extract-XISO GUI (released in 2026), which lets you click “Create XISO” and select that folder.

Method 2: The Pro Way (PowerShell/Terminal)

For those who want precision, the command line is actually faster.

  1. Place extract-xiso.exe and your game ISO in the same folder.
  2. Open PowerShell (Shift + Right Click in the folder -> Open PowerShell window here).
  3. Run the “Rewrite” command. This strips the junk and formats it for xemu in one move: .\extract-xiso.exe -r "YourGameName.iso"Note: The -r flag rewrites the image into the XISO format. If you want to keep your original file, use the -c (create) command instead after extracting.

The Browser Shortcut: xdvdfs

If you don’t want to download any software at all, you can use the web-based tool xdvdfs.

  • How it works: You upload your ISO to the web app, and it processes the XDVDFS partition locally in your browser.
  • Pros: No installation; works on Mac, Linux, and Windows.
  • Cons: It doesn’t always apply “media patching” to .xbe files, which means some games might still refuse to boot depending on your xemu BIOS.

Why is my XISO so much smaller?

Don’t panic if your 7.5GB file suddenly drops to 1.2GB. Standard “Redump” ISOs include a video partition and massive amounts of “empty” data to fill the physical disc. An XISO only keeps the actual game data. It’s better for your hard drive and faster for the emulator to read.

Quick Troubleshooting

  • “Failed to load disc”: Ensure you didn’t just rename the file extension. Renaming game.iso to game.xiso does nothing; the internal file system must be converted.
  • Long Filenames: Some older versions of conversion tools hate spaces or symbols. Try renaming your source ISO to something simple like game.iso before converting.
